Group Caricature Portrait

This is the finished version of the group caricature I was working on. It's on 24"x19" bristol board, done in ink and colored pencil. Right after it is the pencil version before the inking.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for your kind words over on my blog regarding my Sinatra caricature. By the way, I took a look at your blog after that, and enjoyed your rendition of Frank's "One For My Baby"! That's such a heartfelt, poignant song, isn't it?

This group caricature is quite good, and I gather you're working from still photos, which is the norm for this type of assignment. I always have a hard time getting results that way for my showbiz caricatures, so I always work from video. By seeing the subject in action, the head in rotation and expression changing, I find I get a more all around visual "impression" of the person. I can see the underlying design of the face more easily and, by seeing the person emote, I get a better feel for bringing out their inner personality.

Anyway, I thought I'd pass along this tip to you so that you might get those "caricature muscles" up to speed. Give it a try - I think you'll enjoy the process! Again, much thanks for dropping by my site!
